Malta Film Weekend evolved from Malta Film Expo organised in 2017.

The events are ranging from screenings, discussions and workshops.

The aim of the MFW is to provide workshops dealing with current issues for people working in the industry, fulfill the gap in the standard education while inviting guest and specialist from Malta and abroad as well as to bring cinema closer to the regular cinema goers.

In year 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic and implemented worldwide and nationwide restrictions, the organisers decided to continue the event bringing the entire experience online. The event was held on Facebook and for the first time it brought together audience located in different parts of the globe.

The guest and lecturers of all time editions were: Nexus Production Group, Stargate Studios Malta, Andrea Lodovichetti, Vanessa Vella, Michal Oleszczyk, Monika Maslowska and many others.

This edition of the Malta Film Weekend happened entirely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program included lectures about:
- screenwriting
- filmmaking using technique of improvisation
- virtual production
- interview with the Malta Youth Film Festival winner
and panel dedicated to financing films.

The 2019 edition of the MFW took place in Valletta Campus (Old University Campus)

The program included:
- film screenings
- panel discussion about available fundings
- workshops about film techniques, film-making process and distribution platforms

MFE 2017
Malta Film Expo was an event initiated as part of Cultural Partnership Agreement through Arts Council Malta.

The program included:
- film screenings
- panel discussion and talks about the different fields of film industry and film of tomorrow
- exhibition related to the old cinema
